I Never Expected This To Happen

I never expected that to happen, it fact it took me completely by surprise. No one was even aware it was ever likely to happen. I was so shocked.

The morning started as every morning did. The alarm on the radio went off at the usual time. I did as I always did before leaving for work.

The bus was on time, the usual people greeted each other. That early morning journey was uneventful.

The morning went as normal, the children working at their desks, quietly, studiously.

The weather was wet, raining and windy, the sky darkening as time passed. By lunchtime it was really dark and the rain was heavy.

As the afternoon progressed the children became more agitated and finding it harder to settle to work. I decided to change the timetable and moved the children to sit on the carpet and read a story to them.

Thank goodness that I did because suddenly there was lightning, then thunder. This made the children jumpy and feeling nervous. The storm intensified as the wind got stronger.

After about 20 minutes of heavy rain striking the windows, a crack appeared in one. I quickly moved the children to join the class next door, where they shared desks and space. We got them settled to drawing, and we kept talking to them to help calm them.

After about an hour the storm lessened but it was still raining and windy. The time came for the children to go home, thankfully the rain and wind had almost stopped. This was a relief for the staff.

We stayed as normal to do our marking and planning, but all agreed to go home earlier than usual.

The next morning after my usual routine I arrived at school to find one of the windows of my classroom boarded up. Apparently, the crack had spread and around 7pm the window had broken. Glass all over the window sill and cupboards nearby.

Windows stand firm against so much but this one had finally given way.

Fortunately, no one was in the room, no one was hurt. Also, thankfully the rain and wind had stopped, so nothing was ruined or lost.

However, we were finding glass hidden in books and drawers for sometime after.

Not something you expect or can plan for in advance.

I really didn’t expect anything like that to happen.

(This actually happened whilst I was teaching)
