Not What It Seems – A Loving Daddy - Jenni Bowers

She shuffled her bum down the bed, hiding under the blankets – Daddy was outside the door, just saying to mummy, ‘Don’t worry dear you put the kettle on, I’ll read Helen a story’. Helen listened with dread and excitement rolled into one strange feeling as daddy entered her room. She’d been so excited to get a room of her own and had cowboys and Indian wallpaper, especially done for her by him on his weekend breaks – he loved her so much.

‘What a good father he is’, all relatives and friends thought, always playing with his children and taking Helen out so much, or sitting in whilst his wife Jean went out occasionally to play bingo.

Her sisters shared a bedroom and Helen would sometimes sleep in their room, telling them funny stories and giggling lots but those nights daddy would come racing upstairs, switch on the light and grab Helens pyjama bottoms, pull them down and thrash her bare behind, causing her and her sisters to scream and sob, then he would rush to the bathroom and mummy would come up and comfort Helen and try to explain, ‘Daddy wants peace and quiet, not loud laughter in the evenings,’ – she never explained why though.

So this time, as she was alone she knew he would cuddle her lots, kiss her lots and as his hands stroked her body, would tell her how much he loved her, it was better than the hidings and she had to keep it secret as her sisters would get jealous, he told her, as he held her close once more.
