The Helicopter Crash - Gerry Miller

The hospital carried out few tests after all there had been no blood or broken bones evident. His responses to the doctors in A and E were clear and unequivocal. He could speak English, read and write, he just could not remember his name or address. His head seemed to be sparking and shorting out but as the good kind doctor said it sounded like a bad migraine triggered by the accident. Only the word Roden was going round and round in his head. The staff were incredibly kind and yet so exhaustingly busy. As he felt that Roden was all he knew he would to that, not that he remembered anyone. Leaving the hospital he hobbled away, something was definitely not right with one side of his body.

As he passed the security on the door he heard them say the car from his hit and run and been found burnt out, so no information would be found there. Roden believed he was a pragmatist and eventually answers would come. The generosity of strangers could be overwhelming. All he knew was he was the victim of a hit and run, Roden smiled to himself even the car that had hit him was unidentified and whilst he knew not why he had to leave the hospital before the police came for photos etc.

He had not absorbed all that was happening his memory was definitely not fully functioning. Roden absorbed all the sounds around even what he believed was the clipping of stilettoes along the street. His legs staggered and his feet seemed to have a direction of their own. A firm arm grasped him as he fell against the wall. A soft gentle voice said, ‘It’s Roden isn’t it? Through the blur that was now his vision he caught the vague outline of a small Asian female. He recognised her voice and suddenly replied, ‘Miss Leigh Toe, how are you?’

As Roden explained about the accident Miss Leigh Toe was very attentive and her arm still supported him as they walked. She led him home and into his bedsit explaining she was in the room next door. He explained that he had no memories but the police wanted to take his prints and his photo to help clarify his identity, they would circulate his photo when taken. Kindness and sympathy had been shown to him in every way, yet he had sensed danger.

Roden’s brain was underpowered and seemed to lack any control or direction. He felt his body wobbling as she steered him to the bed. Miss Leigh helped him spread out on the bed and then he was gone as his energy left him completely. How long he stayed there Roden did not know, through out what he believed was a coma he had sensed visitors frequently visit his room. His legs felt better and migraine had gone. He knew that to lose all the knowledge he had assimilated in his time would have been a disaster. He felt the presence of Miss Leigh and sensed her concern for him was sincere. As she came and went his energy levels came and went and Roden believed in his ability to recover.

Then crashing in the night disturbed him and Roden staggered to the window. A helicopter had broken through the roof of the pub next door, bursting into flames, electric cables sparked and lightening flashed in the sky. Roden watched the falling debris standing transfixed. The knocking on his door brought him back to reality; Leigh walked in. ‘Roden how are you?’ Smiling at him she took his arm. ‘Come we will return to the star ship, this world is not suitable for our populous, our search for a new planet goes on.’ Roden and Leigh Toe went onto the roof and with the next sparking cable and lightening flash they returned to their space ship.
