The Fairy Fountain - Gerry Miller

Polly was really fed up her broken arm was really getting on her nerves, and her mum was getting on her nerves too. The swinging chair rocked backwards and forwards and Polly's eyes roamed around the garden. She loved the tinkling sound of the water and moved off the swing to sit by the fairy fountain.

A little bee was trying to get out of the water and Polly took an ivy leaf and steered him onto the tiny boat and placed him on the grass. He flew up and danced around her and she smiled as he buzzed a thank you. Polly was surprised. ' How did I knew what he was saying!'

Polly startled as she heard rustling getting nearer and a ladybird came flying past her ear and landed on the fountain fairy's nose. She had two little buckets hanging from her feet and was clearly upset. 'Can you help me please, please my house is on fire and I can't find the children?' Polly grabbed her beaker and, filling it with water, told the ladybird, 'Lead on.' Across the garden they went and through to the front gate.

Polly was shocked some horrible adult had thrown a cigarette butt into the garden and smoke could be seen! As ladybird hovered she gently poured the beaker of water over the end of the cigarette. Then picking up the butt with an 'Ugh' of disgust she threw it over the wall. Ladybird was calling frantically for her children, Polly gently started parting the weeds and there tucked in the shade of a gnome were the seven baby ladybirds.

As Polly heard a slightly alarmed mum calling for her she left a very grateful and happy ladybird with her children. Maybe it was not going to be such a boring recovery after all.
