A Day In The Life Of Bill The Goldfish - Anna Browning

Bill swam to and fro in the tiny glass aquarium, feeling sad and lonely. He was also bored out of his mind. When suddenly he felt himself being scooped up and dropped into a plastic bag. Bill's tail thrashed crazily. His gills frantically breathing in and out the little air there was, trapped in the bag. The plastic walls began to close in on him. But in the next second the plastic walls spread apart and air gushed in. Bill found himself turned upside down and PLOP he was dropped into a vast sea of water, sinking down to the bottom which was dark and warm. Bill's pounding heart calmed down as he swam around trying to explore this mysterious place. Wherever he was he liked it very much. Much nicer than that glass box and plastic bag.

Bill swam towards the green fronds of a strange plant he had never seen before and it felt good as he nuzzled the surface of the leaves with his mouth eating the plankton floating around. Mm. Mm, that tasted good. He felt he was being watched. He looked up and saw a huge pair of bulging eyes staring at him. They belonged to a frog sitting in the mud. Bill felt a little bit unsure as he had never met a frog before, with a big, wide mouth and long dangly legs. It seemed the frog was as scared as he was because the frog dived up and away towards the light before Bill could do anything.

Bill then noticed a snail sliding along on the side of the pond, its long tentacles searching for food. Bill hoped it did not want to eat him and he swam away just in case, trying to camouflage himself amongst the plants. But he was too orange. Out of the corner of his eye he saw several other fish heading towards him and looking just like him, all shiny golden orange. They came closer to investigate. Bill introduced himself hoping that they were friendly. One of the fish came forward and introduced himself as Fred. He had been there the longest. ‘Welcome Bill to our home. There is plenty of room for all of us. We also get fed daily with lovely tasty food. So you won't be hungry. But you must be careful of the cat who tries to catch us with his claws and the Heron who tries to gobble us down his long beak. Come join us and play.’

Bill felt so happy. His heart was about to burst. He was no longer lonely and sad. He could now look forward to new adventures. What a day of surprises. He darted forward towards his new friends looking forward to his new exciting life.
