1966 - Jeanette Rothwell

It was 1966 and England were playing in the World Cup Final. Some friends had invited us over to their house to watch the game. We brought our portable black and white television so that we could add to their small set and we put a TV at each end of their lounge. There were quite a few friends there and the beer, in huge cans, was flowing freely. My friend and I started to prepare a meal for everyone and cooked a batch of chips. To keep them warm while we cooked more chips, we put the first batch in a colander in the oven. We were newly-weds and rather green. We forgot that the colander was made of blue plastic and when we came to open the oven again, there was a pile of chips sitting on top of a melted mess of dripping blue plastic. The concentration on the game meant that nobody knew that we retrieved the chips that were on top and threw the rest away. With the euphoria of winning the world cup, plus the beer, the company would have eaten anything!
