The First Time - Maureen Rampersaud

The couple on the screen were locked in a passionate embrace. Amy fidgeted with the huge box of popcorn on her lap, resulting in much of it spilling onto the floor. She was fifteen and this was her first proper date. Surreptitiously she studied Ed's profile; he was staring fixedly ahead, looking as scared as she was.

Amy was relieved when they left the cinema, wishing they had seen an action film, like the ones her brother was addicted to . . . at least there wasn't all that kissing. No-one had ever kissed her before, not properly.

Ed was in the same year at school and Amy had noticed him . . . across the playground or in the lunch queue. He wasn't the best looking boy in the school, but there was something about him that attracted her. Maybe it was the way his fringe flopped into his brown eyes, or that she could pick out his laugh a mile away, or that he stopped to help a tearful younger boy up when he had fallen and scraped his knees. He must have noticed her too, because he sat next to her at lunch and asked her out on this, their first date.

It started raining so they ran to the chip shop and sheltered in a doorway, eating hot, vinegary chips. Ed started to laugh.

'What?'

'I dunno . . . I'm just so happy. Do you realize that it's taken me a whole year to pluck up the courage to ask you out? I can't believe I'm actually here with you!'

He was so open that Amy confessed that she'd fancied him for ages too.

'Amy Bates, put down that chip at once!'

'But . . . why?'

He leaned towards her until his mouth touched her lips. Amy closed her eyes and knew she would remember this moment forever.
