The First Time - Diane Silverston

The next week they met again, he had joined the local Young Libs group she belonged to. They found they had a lot in common, the music, art and literature they enjoyed. From that first time she saw him, she knew. Although it was across a crowded barn where the Area Young Liberals were having their Summer Dance, she immediately knew.

She took a deep breath as she saw him moving across the dance area towards her.

She was mesmerized by his piercing bright blue eyes and enigmatic smile.

'Care to dance?'

'I'd love to,' she replied in a whisper.

As they joined the dancers she realised he was just the right height for her, not too tall. This was super, so often her partners towered over her.

They enjoyed their time together that evening, and realised they lived quite close to each other.

She was 16 and he was 15, so both were working towards their 'O levels' and later 'A levels'. Time passed and although they had both been born in the same year, they were a school year apart. September meant she went to college. The following year he started at a neighbouring University. She left before him and moved East to start the career that would last for nearly four decades.

When he left university he had to move North East for his job, but still they met as often as possible, knowing they wanted to be together.

Seven years after their first meeting they decided it was time to begin the next phase of their lives. Find a home, located where they could both work, get married and start a family. She knew, as she had that first time, he was the one for her.

Then fate took a hand. Whilst he was driving from a meeting about his forthcoming promotion, a car swerved into his path.

For the first time for many years Marylyn realised she was on her own. She had got to plan for life by herself.

She had known from that first meeting that he would be very special to her, but now he was gone.
