The Lure Of The Wild - Maureen Rampersaud

June 2014

Beth sat among her toys which were scattered to the four corners of the lounge. She was a bit fed up with them if she was honest. Making towers and knocking them down was amusing for a while, but there had to be more to life than this. She was distracted by the clonking sound of her mum doing some washing up. She got up and went to see if there was more opportunity for adventure in the kitchen. She saw something that might fit the bill, so Beth followed Sooty out of the back door into the garden.

There was a creature buzzing about the flowers and it was fun watching Sooty chasing it. He was only a kitten and did all sorts of mad things that a grown up cat like Sam would never do. A gust of wind ruffled her hair and made the trees whisper secrets to each other. Bang! She jumped. The gate had banged shut. She and Sooty went to investigate. The wind blew it open again, so they went through it and heard it bang behind them.

Beth looked about her. She had been through here with Mum, but it looked more exciting now. Everything was very big. She touched the tree's skin and it felt rough and flaky. It must be a grandma. She put her ear to it to hear it's heartbeat. Sooty had found an old, tired tree that was lying down. He had his paw inside a hole, then he jumped back in alarm. Beth looked inside the hole and gasped.

'It's alright Sooty, they're only ants. I saw them in my 'A' for Ant book'

There were lots of them, marching about. She sat down and watched them for a long time. They carried bits and pieces here and there, they were very busy but it looked like fun.

'Beth!'

She turned to see her mum running towards her. Mum snatched her up into her arms and squeezed her so tight that it hurt. Beth thought, 'I think I'll be an ant when I grow up.'
