October 2012
This must be it. Jon stopped the car in front of the little bungalow. 'Not very salubrious but it was good of your parents to let us have it for the weekend. Fabulous view.' Vicky looked out of the window; the sea was calm and looked almost Mediterranean.
They stowed their supplies in the kitchen and went to explore the rest of the rooms.
'Oh no, single beds.' said Vicky,
'Don't worry we'll soon change that, we'll just push them together. Here give me a hand moving the bedside table.'
'Ops that's the lamp!'
'Don't worry it's only the bulb that's broken. We can change that. Let's get the beds together.' Jon pushed one of the beds.
Vicky stared in horror as the corner of the bed gouged out a great strip of wallpaper.
'Don't worry we can stick it back!' Jon filled the washing up bowl with warm water and gently stroked the paper back in place.
'There, good as new.' He stood back to view his handiwork and stepped right into the bowl of water, toppled backwards, grabbed onto the bed to save himself and pulled the duvet off the bed onto the water soaked floor.
'Don't worry we'll soon dry it. Take the cover off.'
They hung the duvet cover on the washing line in the garden.
'OK now I'll just change that light bulb.' Jon pulled a chair towards the centre of the room.
'I'll put the main bulb in the bedside lamp and we can buy a new one tomorrow.
'Oops.' John's foot went straight through the cane chair.
'Oh, don't worry, we can just put a cushion over it no one'll notice; good job I'd got the bulb out. Trouble is I can't get my leg out, it's like being in a lobster pot, the more I pull the more the wicker digs into my leg.'
Vicky stared at the blood dripping down Jon's leg. 'How we going to get you out?'
'See if you can find some wire cutters or something. Or I could hop to the car.'
'And drive with a chair on your leg. I don't think so.'
'I think it's a fire brigade job.'
They arrived quite quickly, the firemen, and the ambulance men who took Jon and Vicky to the hospital.
After a couple of injections and a lot of bandaging they decided he should stay in for the night.
'So sorry Vic.'
'Don't worry, but this is not exactly the way I planned to spend our honeymoon.'
