April 2012
Dear Elsie,
How are you dear? It seems ages since I heard from you, I hope you are over all your little problems. You mentioned in your last that you were giving up smoking for Lent. Brave person! Have you kept to it? Can't be easy after fifty years. I decided we'd give up chocolate this year; not too bad for me but Eric loves his choccie biccies. Talking of Eric, he'd had been acting very strangely for a few weeks. Kept going to the library, well that's not like him. I don't think he's ever read a book. Not right through. If he wasn't at the library he was going for long afternoon walks. Well you know him, it's a job to get him to walk anywhere. I began to get a bit worried and at one time I began to think he was having an affair. Not very likely I know but he can be fairly charming if he puts himself out. Anyway I decided to follow him and would you believe, he actually did go to the library. Then I began to wonder if he was meeting his bit on the side there. So followed him again and would you credit it, there he was, sitting in the cafe with a mug of hot chocolate and a huge piece of gateau. When he saw me he was so flustered he dropped the mug. All the hot drink went down his trousers, the mug smashed into a hundred pieces all over the floor. He leapt up, slipped over banged his head on the chair and passed out. So embarrassing. Everyone was staring. The cafe staff called for an ambulance and they took him off to hospital. They thought he had concussion, then they found he had broken his leg as well. So he's still in there. I told him 'That's what you get for not keeping Lent.'
Well dear I'd better finish now, it's Easter Sunday, so I've relented a bit and I'm going to take him a nice big Easter egg, That should cheer him up.
Keep in touch,
Much love,
Doris
