Nature or Nurture or the Turn of a Card - Gerry Miller

Rosie was as miserable as sin; she had slept badly and woke up in a bad mood. She struggled down the steps of her flat and knew that her hair was lank and greasy. She was fed up her life was next to shit but not quite there yet. Her life was not about luck , the turn of the card or the toss of a coin it was about anything that can go wrong does. Rosie was a triplet, three flipping girls and of course the other two were better than her. She shuffled along, people barging into her. Today was not going to be her day; she felt it in her bones. She hated being an apprentice hairdresser and turning the hair of her model the wrong colour yesterday was going to be the icing on the cake. Hair today and gone tomorrow and as she entered the salon she was smiling.

Susie felt lucky, why she had no idea, but as she bounded out of the flat she was filled with the joy of life. Her titian hair blew soft and curling around her outline giving her the appearance of a golden goddess. The walk to work was uneventful as she smiled and nodded to a few of her regulars, they smiled back. Being a hairdresser was rewarding, Susie was creative and she loved turning the mousey client into a bright and cheerful robin. She thought about her two sisters and knew that she was unlike them both. Her life had been determined and directed by her, no stupid Tarot card reading, no roll of the dice and definitely no toss of the coin. She thought of Rosie, slow and stupid and Patsy the dreamer. Susie was making her own way in life and she walked into the salon smiling.

Patsy lay in bed her titian hair spread across the pillow; Jeff moved in his sleep and snuggled up to her. Time to get out and face the world, her flamboyant nature led to her choice of clothing, Reds, orange and purple today and she threaded plastic roses through her hair. Patsy was reckless and daring feeling life was short, so not to waste a drop. Her clients loved her and she had now built herself a name for bohemian hairstyles, she skipped out of the flat and wondered what could be done with today; life was so exciting, fate must have something good in store. Her sisters not able to interfere with all their mumbo jumbo-No tarot readings, no I Ching with the five coins, just pure and unadulterated enjoyment. Life could not be nurture she mused else we triplets would be the same; Patsy entered the salon smiling.
