Salad days - Jenni Bowers

March 2014

As Esmerelda wandered amongst the lush green foliage, admiring the tall canopy above her head she wondered about her sisters, Gertrude and Miriam – when will we three meet again? she pondered.

They'd had a happy childhood, well fed and adventurous, they roamed for miles, discovering many new areas to hide, slithering and sliding up and down various obstacles until one day Esmerelda realised she was alone.

She had noticed the large pool with it's strange smell, but decided to carry on hiding amongst the woodland whilst her sisters drank the cool liquid and lay down to sleep.

Sure they would wake and come looking, she too slept. However, when she awoke they'd disappeared. She searched and searched and even returned to where her own family of several hundred were living, questioning them in worried tones.

As the foliage gave way to a newly planted field of lettuce, she noticed little blue chips amongst the seedlings, she decided to try a few seedlings to keep her strength up and didn't notice the blue chip attached to one of them.

Oh my, my tummy aches now, she thought and curled up on the warm earth to sleep awhile as she heard her sisters calling, 'come to us Essie – Hosta heaven is so beautiful.'
