The Far Future (Chapter One) – Maureen Rampersaud

Adam opened his eyes. He blinked several times. There was a transparent screen in front of him; he was afraid to move. He decided to think through his situation before doing anything.

He was prostate inside a body shaped container. He could see the walls of a room outside; no humans yet. How did he know about humans? How did he know that he was human? Adam realised that memories would be useful.

There was as large red button within reach. Time for action – he pressed it.

With a deep whirring noise the door opened and he felt air on his face. At some level he was questioning how he knew it was air, but the here and now was more important.

It took him a while to mobilise his body enough to achieve a standing position. He had no idea how long he had been in the capsule.

He looked around hopefully, but there was no trace of others. He wandered out of the open door and down a path. He noted baby trees growing beside it, where there should have been tall ones. Maybe this was a memory; he felt more hopeful.

At the end of the path, as he already knew, was a house with red shutters. It was closed up, as if the occupants had gone away for the summer. He put his hand in his pocket and pulled out a key.

Adam took a deep breath as he pushed open the door . . .
