April 2011

Letter to the Editor

How lucky we were to have summer weather in the first weeks of April. The sun shining, bringing warmth to our winter bodies. However with the sun and warmth come little irritations such as flies, ants, wasps and men with no shirts on.

I am not averse to seeing men's bodies, in fact I welcome the sight of a toned, tanned torso with a six pack or even less. What woman wouldn't! By the pool, on the beach, working on a building site, yes, but not in the High Street. Or any other street for that matter. There should be a law against this state of undress as there is nothing worse than seeing a bare beer belly preceding the rest of a body into a shop, supermarket or pub and it should not be allowed. Apart from the fact it is unhygienic it is off putting, especially when trying to decide what cut of meat to buy for dinner. Shop keepers can take issue and have a 'no top – no entry' rule.

Even at cricket matches men divest their tops and, as much as I hate the game, it is just not cricket.

So, men, have a little decorum and cover up in public places, whatever size or age you are.

Yours faithfully,

Ann Southwood
