Living in my head - Lewis Button (Leigh U3A)

November 2010

My name is Aiden. I live within my head where I am alright. I do get frustrated though, it is mainly when people do not understand me. I try my best to be patient, but sometimes I have to shout and scream. Some people took me and my classmates to the theatre to see what they call a pantomime. I really wanted to go there as my friends were all so excited to see the actors, but I do have this fear of people dressing up in strange clothes. I do not know why, it just makes my head spin. When we got to the theatre my teacher, Miss Barley said to this man, "Hold Aiden's hand, Lew." This I did and I said, "Not go in.", he smiled and nodded and I just held his hand and shook my head. I was beginning to panic, I could not face going in, my stomach churned I just shook my head, but no one knows how scared I am, no one understands.

My teacher parked the coach and came back smiling. She smiles a lot my teacher, Miss Barley. She has a kind smile, but I still feel miserable, "Not go in.", I kept saying, "Not go in."

I saw all of my friends inside all happy all smiling and I wanted to be with them, but my legs would not go in. I shook my head, why don't they understand, "Me not go in." Suddenly I went in, I don't know how, but I was standing in the theatre with my classmates. A bell rang, a man shouted, "Take your seats, the show will start in five minutes." I shook and cried, shook and cried, "Not go in." An old man with a funny waistcoat said to my Miss Barley, "Take the boy up the stairs to the back of the auditorium, he might be better there." So I went up the stairs and looked at the performers dancing and singing, this must be the pantomime I thought. I still would not go in, but peeked through the curtains.

The man in the funny waistcoat said to Miss Barley, "I'll save you two seats at the back." But I would not go in, all the children laughed and sang and cheered. I did so want to be with them, but couldn't; then Miss Barley said, "I'm tired Aiden, I must sit down." and sat in one of the seats. I felt tired too, but I could not go in, but suddenly Miss Barley looked up and I was sitting right there next to her and I waved to all of my friends in the front rows. The interval came and Lew and another lady called Deep handed out sweets and drinks and I came down and sat with my friends.

The music was lovely, the girls were so pretty and they danced and sang and funny men made us laugh. I told Lew, "I like this, I like this very much." I booed when the Ugly men started on poor Cinderella, it was good. Then there were two men on the stage singing a song that we sing at school called 'I am the Music Man'. When they got to the part that was I'm the music man, I am a Dam Buster, he put his arms out like an aeroplane and spun around. I pushed past Lew and he tried to stop me, but I was too quick. He thought I was going out the door, but I started dancing in the aisles, down the steps singing as I went with my arms outstretched, "I'm the music man." I like this pantomime. I don't know why, but Lew was crying and so was Deep. I think I like this pantomime, I'll come again, "Next year." said Lew.
